Client Name: Allen ISD
Product(s): Citrix XenApp 4.5, XenServer, and Provisioning Server for Datacenters
Services: Consulting, Installation, and Support
Identified Client Problem – Why did they hire us?
Allen ISD was looking for a solution for application delivery. Teachers needed the ability to work from home and access resources as if in the classroom. Resources included grade book and course curriculum applications. Allen ISD was also looking for away to deliver and manage applications in student labs more efficiently. Currently each lab machine had to be upgraded individually which consumed a great deal of the IT department’s time. Citrix was able to provide remote but secure access to applications for teachers and streamline software upgrades and student access to applications in lab environments.
Identified Solution(s) – What did we do for them?
Allen ISD first partnered with Macer Technology in 2003. Starting with a 50 user pilot to test remote access to applications and monitor performance Allen ISD soon realized the benefits of Citrix Presentation Server, (now called XenApp). A few months later Allen ISD rolled out the technology to 1,150 teachers. This allowed teachers to access resources from anywhere including home and around the campus. A year later the same model was extended to student labs including 700 machines. Recently Macer Technology introduced virtualization via XenServer to consolidate the XenApp farm onto fewer physical hosts and increase utilization of the current hardware. Macer Technology provided Citrix consulting, design, installation, and support throughout these years. Macer Technology is still their go to partner for all Citrix needs including software upgrades and keeping them informed of the latest technologies through Citrix that can benefit their environment specifically.
Return for the Client – How did it help them?
- Implementing Citrix has kept Allen ISD from refreshing hardware for six years saving the school district at least 800,000.00 dollars.
- Allen ISD is able to support over 1,850 users without hiring additional staff due to the centralized application delivery model Citrix follows.
- Provisioning server for datacenters allows Allen ISD to build servers simultaneously from a single standard workload image.
- Utilizing XenApp on XenServer allowed Allen to virtualize their servers thereby consolidating their existing hardware to further lower their cost of operations.
- XenServer will also provide fault tolerance for the XenApp farm should a physical host fail. In such an instance the workloads will move to an available host and users experience no downtime.
